When a Joliet area customer contacted us about installing a backup camera for him in his 1998 Dodge Ram he knew there would be some challenges and wanted to put us to the test. The customer has a few big toys he needs to tow and his Dodge Ram was perfect for the job except for one little thing: He needed some help backing up to his trailer.
The challenge with this truck is the radio opening size. It is too small to add a double din radio like he wanted for the back up camera display. After a customer consult we found what camera and radio would fit all of our customers needs. A Kenwood double din with 7″ screen was perfect for displaying the image for the camera. One of the important features was he wanted a big picture.
Next we chose to go with a lip mount waterproof camera. This allows us to conceal the camera, keeping it out-of-the-way, and doesn’t take away from the look of the truck. The sealed camera will have no problem performing in any weather condition and last for years. We backed this statement up with a 3 year warranty.
When we were consulting with the customer we saw that the bumper had been replaced and he didn’t have a license plate light. There was a hole for one so we found a camera that had a light integrated into it and used the existing mounting location for the camera w/the light. Making it a double win for the customer.
After the parts were chosen it was time for us to get to work and face the challenge of installing a radio that was too big to fit into the factory dash while keeping the look of the truck as factory as possible.
We rebuilt the dash opening and fabricated a new mounting system for the new radio. Looks are important but we can’t overlook the behind the scenes action. The new radio was bolted to the sub dash stronger than the factory mounts and wired in to the truck. We used a special texturing process to match the new area of the dash with the rest of the dash.
The camera was mounted and wired in taking a lot of care to ensure all wires were run in a safe manner and protected from the elements they will encounter on a daily basis. Challenge accepted and completed. The customer was thrilled to be able to have such a modern piece of technology in his tow rig.
