One of our favorite vehicles at Tip Top Customs is a Corvette. And when it is an extremely low mileage example in a convertible, that makes us like it even more. So when a client from Yorkville, Illinois came in with this beautiful car, we were chomping at the bit to work on it. We sat down with the client and went over his objectives with the vehicle.
He wanted to keep the integrity of the vehicle intact, meaning no irreversible modifications could be made. Overall output and clarity were also on his checklist. That was a pretty tall order for us, but we love challenges. An appointment was made and the vehicle was dropped off. This build took approximately four straight days to complete this high end car audio build.
Kenwood DDX771 Provides The Source
Up front we started with a Kenwood DDX771 in-dash touchscreen unit to give the client all the modern conveniences of a new Corvette. Bluetooth for music streaming and handsfree calling, full iPod and iPhone control, and a wonderful touchscreen interface were all on tap and we were able to fit it perfectly in his dash. As you will see in the pictures we did our usual body protection to help eliminate any chance of damage to the vehicle while it was in our care.
Hertz Mille MLK2 Components Up Front
Next we moved to the front speakers. We chose the Hertz Mille MLK2 package, which is their flagship speaker. These speakers are the pinnacle in clarity and output, bringing concert level volume along with studio quality to the Corvette. It comes with a 6.5″ woofer and 1.2″ tweeter, and as you can see from the pictures we made a custom mount in the kick panels to hold them in place. We used stock mounting holes so again, no modification to the vehicle. This was no easy task since the original speakers were a 4″ mid and 1.5″ tweeter mounted in a Bose pod. A lot of planning and time went into this in order to maintain the integrity of the vehicle.
Hertz Energy 8″ Woofers Make The Bass in This Corvette
In normal Tip Top Customs fashion we added a custom subwoofer enclosure in the rear of the Corvette to house two Hertz Energy 8″ subwoofers. These speakers work great in a small sealed enclosure and provide hard hitting, feel it in your chest bass that keeps up great with the double bass kick drum in rock music. This enclosure was mounted to stock locations again, keeping with the client wishes.
Audison AV5.1K Amplifier Pumps 1500 Watts Into This ‘Vette
Wrapping up all this sound is the Audison AV5.1k amplifier. With almost 1500 watts of stump pulling power, words can’t properly describe what this amplifier means to this system. It houses an incredible active crossover network allowing each of the speakers to have their own dedicated amplifier channel. This allows for much better fine tuning of the sound, and allows the amplifier to better control each speaker. As you can see from the pictures, we made a custom mount for the amp and we backlit it with white led’s shining through the clear plexiglass ring around the amp. Again, we utilized stock mounting locations, and even designed a cover made with the red carpet to completely hide the amplifier for a stock look.
Tip Top Customs Is Up To the Challenge
Whenever a client gives us a challenging task like not modifying their vehicle while at the same time delivering incredible sound quality, it can be a daunting task. We achieved this goal by only drilling two holes in this vehicle for the power wire, and this was done in the fiberglass part of the body and could be reversed in the future if needed.
Another Happy Client
In the end it all comes down to the demo. Would the client like the finished product? He loved it! He was completely blown away by the sound quality and the concert level output that seemed like it could just keep going and going. In fact he loved it so much that he gave us another vehicle to work on. We consider this the ultimate compliment from one of our client.
